LOVE LETTERS TO HEAVEN

In June 2019, Pinay Liminality put a call out for queer and trans filipino/x to reflect and write to their chosen ancestors. Pinay Liminality collaborated with artist, Sami Schilf, who created illustrated portraits inspired by these letters.

The display of the illustrated letters were featured in a collaborative art installation at the group exhibition, New Mestizx in the Juan R. Fuentes Gallery at Accion Latina.

SENDING LOVE LETTERS TO HEAVEN

digital sound

This collection of letters is a Pinxy epistemology focusing on our relationships with the ancestors we inherit and/or claim. It is a diasporic perspective on kapwa, a shared queer kalooban. Narrated by queer and trans filipino/x's, these letters are prayers, reflections, and remembrances of those who accompany us in our experiences of grief, struggle, resilience, and liberation. As we begin to disrupt time and create new worlds that embrace and go beyond liminality, we honor all the folx who vow to protect us, provide us with manuals to survive and to live more fully, and the future generations to come.

To re-imagine and honor our lineages, we asked queer and trans filipino/x's to write letters reflecting on the following questions:

Who are your chosen ancestors? Whose legacies, memories, and hxstories do you honor? What will you pass down as a queer, filipinx ancestor? What does intergenerational chosen family look like to you? How do you envision a future that centers our queerness and filipino/x-ness.

The selected letters in this collection are written by - Peklat, Nico, Sara, Christine, Deann, Sami, and Amanda.
